Fasching is a roman Catholic festival, which originated over seven hundred
and fifty years ago. Germany is one of the primier countries which
still particpate in this old festivol. Other countries still celebrate
fasching, but not as heavily as germany. Fasching is also known as
Karneval. It is a festival comprable to the french Mardi Gras.
The celebration lasts for ceveral days, but most of the serious partying
is done on Rosenmontag and Faschingdienstag. This is the monday and
tuesday before Ash Wednesday.
During the Fasching celebration,
elabrate plays are performed in which people are dressed up in bright costumes
and are able to act wildly without fear of conciquences. These plays
were known as Fastnachspieling. They originated in the sixteen hundreds,
during the midevial periods. It started as a Roman Catholic festivol,
celebrated mostely in the citys. Fasching activities included masquraids,
and other elaborate activities. In Colonge A prince and princess
were chosen to rule for the last day of the celebrations.

Their are yousually large paraids
where a whole section of a street is covered with loud, drunken people.
Everyone is in a moode to celebrate, and everyone has a good time with
good music and large amounts of great alcohol.
